Here After
Where Do We Go From Here (after Martin Luther King)
Description
A collage artwork by Studio K.O.S. created in 2020 and exhibited at Maureen Paley gallery. The piece is part of a series of works by Studio K.O.S. that explore themes of social and political change, referencing Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1967 book of the same name. The artwork, along with other works by Studio K.O.S., explores the idea of creating new meaning and poetry by "scalpeling" existing texts, in this case, excerpts from King's book "Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?". During workshops, excerpts from the book were read and participants were encouraged to use blades to scalpel the texts and create poetry by subtraction, addition, and omission. Here, cutting, pasting, and obliterating foster novel modes of interpretation. King's book explores the future of the Civil Rights Movement and the need for a more just and equitable society. The artwork by Studio K.O.S. is a visual interpretation and response to King's question, drawing inspiration from his book. It prompts reflection on the ongoing struggle for social justice and the path forward ; exploring themes of social division, the need for unity, and the challenges of creating a more just society.
