Ingredients

  • 1 bottle (750ml) red wine 🍷
  • 1/2 cup aquavit or vodka 🍶 (optional)
  • 1/2 cup brandy 🥃 (optional)
  • 1 cup sugar 🍚
  • 1 orange 🍊, peel and juice
  • 1 lemon 🍋, peel
  • 1 cinnamon stick 🪵
  • 6-8 whole cloves 🌿
  • 10-12 cardamom pods 🌰, lightly crushed
  • 1 inch piece of ginger 🫚, sliced
  • 1/2 cup raisins 🍇
  • 1/2 cup blanched almonds 🌰

Instructions

  • In a large pot, combine red wine, aquavit (or vodka), and brandy (if using). 🔥
  • Add sugar, orange peel and juice, lemon peel, cinnamon stick, cloves, cardamom pods, and ginger. 🍋🍊
  • Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Do not boil! ♨️
  • Reduce heat to low and simmer for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours, to allow the flavors to meld. ⏳
  • Strain the gløgg through a fine-mesh sieve to remove the spices and fruit peels. 🥄
  • Add raisins and almonds to the strained gløgg. 🌰🍇
  • Serve warm in mugs or heatproof glasses. ☕ Enjoy! 🎉
